The season is underway in Central California

Post: # 170Post renz808 »

Hello all,

The season is underway here in the San Francisco Bay Area (Zone 10a). While our moderate climate has its advantages, it also presents unique challenges—especially in our urban settings where space is limited.

This year, many of us are coming to terms with ripening fruit while contending with a new pest: the Black Fig Fly. Only the most diligent growers seem to be finding consistent success against this threat. The excitement of nurturing a new and promising variety can quickly turn to disappointment with premature fruit drop.

That said, a short list of best practices is beginning to show encouraging results. Last season, I was fortunate to ripen more than 100 varieties, with enough fruit to share with friends.

What are your biggest challenges and recipies for success in ripening your favorite varieties?

It's great to see you here Mark, and you are in the better best state for figs and wasps there, but unfortunately the BFF is really doing well too. I am pleased to d=say it is not in Australia, and hopefully it will always stay that way, but I really feel for you there. From what I hear, too many people fail to do enough to stop the spread, and possibly many don't really understand how bad it can be for everyone there.

100 varieties of figs, is a pretty good effort, you must be happy with that, and hopefully this season will be even better for you....you will need to give away even more, but it's a good feeling, helping others.
